About John

Thanks for visiting my Portfolio.

I'm a graphic designer with a certificate in visual communications who has always been attracted to and compelled by visual imagery. An avid "artist" in my youth - producing countless drawings of everything from dinosaurs to spaceships - I began taking my craft seriously in my teens, finding success in several classes both in high school and community college before attaining my certificate through the Visual Communications curriculum at Katharine Gibbs in Providence, RI.

I found placement almost immediately upon graduation with the advertising department of Benny's Stores, Inc., a venerable, family-owned chain of home & automotive supply stores throughout Rhode Island, southern Massachusetts and eastern Connecticut.

In my fifteen years in the ad department of Benny's I worked with a small team of artists in the production of advertising circulars, newspaper ads, in-store signage and web-based content. Duties included product photography, image processing, page layout, typesetting, proofreading, resourcing of product imagery and advertising copy through vendors and online assets, working with the buying department to improve workflow to a deadline, regular communication with newspapers and uploading of finished output to publishing partners. I also often took on-board special projects such as scanning and restoring vintage ads and photographs from early in the company’s history, organizing in-store photo shoots for targeted promotions, photographing, retouching and processing a series of paintings for a company calendar as well as compiling, maintaining and regularly updating a logo database consisting of some 2,075+ corporate logos.

In my time at Cathedral Art Metal, Co. (1996 - 2000) I designed all of the illustrations for the display division’s catalog as well as assembly instructions and display signage. All catalog illustrations and illustrated assembly instructions were executed by hand using technical pens and assorted drafting tools. (I find the Adobe Creative Suite much neater - Illustrator has never stained my shirt!).

In my freelance work I produced a series of cover illustrations for Immortal Lines, a small Boston based publication, reworked and improved graphic content for an online meditation resource, designed corporate logos and graphic designs for three small companies and two large New England pop-culture events. Pro bono work included designing and producing a comprehensive set of themed directory signage for a multi-story convention venue, designing and producing a bumper sticker to promote a fan-driven, pop-culture internet video project, designing a mascot for a friend’s family celebration and the logo for an annual community block party. 'Cause what's more fun than graphics? ...Well, a block party of course.

Thanks so much for your kind attention and I welcome you to browse my galleries, each showcasing selected examples of my work.
